In the Shadow of Wish releases in fifteen weeks! Fifteen. That feels like both an infinity and tomorrow. There’s a lot to be done, and what I thought I would share here, together is a behind-the-scenes look that goes into planning that release.
The Book Nuts & Bolts
One of the first things that occurs for the book is ordering and assigning the ISBNs. That’s done. There are two, one for the physical copy (in this case, a paperback), and we choose to assign one to the eBook as well even though it isn’t necessary for eBook. At Mixed Plate Press, using an ISBN for the eBook feels like an added layer of creative property protection.
We have decided to use Amazon exclusively for the Maci Aurora titles. Why? Here are 3 reasons.
Since the Maci Aurora titles are series romance, the kindle community is a strong choice for the romance category. What better way to get the Maci Aurora brand in the door utilizing the Kindle Unlimited option.
Amazon’s economically an easier choice due to zero upload fees. It is one way to cut publication costs when it works to do so.
Given we own the ISBNs, should we need wider distribution due to successful returns, moving distribution is a possibility if brand goals should change.
The Writing Nuts & Bolts
At this point in the process, the book has been written, formatted, and is with the copy editor. We’re in the final stages of the writing process, pre-publication. When the manuscript returns from the editor, it will get it’s copy edit pass and then be uploaded in order to order the ARC-Proof copies.
The Cover
We’re a little behind in presenting the cover, but our timeline for this book followed a tighter timeline than usual. Our normal goal would be to have the cover out prior to the sixteen-week mark, but we will be cutting it closer to the 12-week point. That’s okay and we’ll modify our marketing objectives to reflect that.
Marketing Plan
With a tighter timeline, the Marketing Plan will consist of front loading as much as we can without the cover. Once the cover is available, we’ll be sure to be meaningful and use that as much as possible. Some of the tactics we’ll use will be early reviews, book blitzs, cover contests, and newsletter cooperatives.
Ultimately, publishing is about planning, implementation and timing. We might put a lot of thought into the prerelease of a book, the true test is making sure the book (the product) can stand the test of time, because the real longevity is long after that release date. So while we pay attention to things like front load marketing, it’s the after-release that’s really going to matter in the long term.
